Amusing Hobby “1/35 IDF Shottkal Aleph 1973” Plastic Model Kit.
Israel had high hopes for the British Centurion as its first post-war generation tank. However, when deployed in actual combat against Syria on the Golan Heights, it became clear the Centurion—developed for European operations—was unsuited for Middle Eastern conditions. The main 20-pounder gun had a wide dispersion pattern at long range. For IDF tank units, whose tactics relied on long-range gun battles in the open desert landscapes of the Middle East, this reduced long-range accuracy proved a fatal flaw. The Centurion's Rolls-Royce Meteor engine, a modified version of the Merlin aircraft engine, also proved problematic. As a gasoline engine, it carried a high risk of ignition and explosion, offered poor fuel efficiency, and was ill-suited for prolonged mobile operations. Furthermore, components like brakes and transmissions proved unreliable. Repeatedly traversing the steep desert dunes caused transmissions and brakes to seize up, while sand clogging the engine air filter led to overheating. Israel had purchased numerous Centurions unsuited for the Middle East and faced funding shortages, leading to the decision to modify and use them. This led to the creation of the “Shot” as a modified Centurion vehicle. The “Shot” was upgraded from its original 20-pounder gun to the new L7 105mm tank gun. This tank gun maintained excellent accuracy at long range without excessive dispersion and possessed strong armor-piercing capabilities. It subsequently saw action in the Third Arab-Israeli War, performing well alongside Israel's Super Sherman and M48 Patton tanks.
Following the outcome of the Third Arab-Israeli War, Israel found itself in a diplomatically disadvantageous position. The resulting arms embargo against Israel necessitated a second upgrade for the “Shot.”
The second upgrade involved replacing the engine with an American Continental AVDS-1790-2A diesel engine and the transmission with an American Allison CD850-6, resulting in the “Shot-Kar Alef.” It participated in conflicts including the Fourth Arab-Israeli War.
