Product Introduction
Mortars sacrifice range compared to standard artillery in favor of simplified, lightweight mechanisms, enabling operation by small crews. Heavy mortars of the 120mm caliber class, introduced in the late 1980s, demonstrate high mobility as they can be towed by light vehicles. The 120mm Mortar RT equipped by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force is a Japanese licensed production of a French-developed weapon. Adopted in fiscal year 1992, it is primarily operated by heavy mortar companies within infantry regiments.
The mortar is wheeled and operates by being towed by a specially modified high-mobility vehicle called the “Heavy Mortar Towing Vehicle.”
