A key feature of vegetable-tanned leather is its charm: it develops a rich, deep color that molds to your hands and body with use. However, an unavoidable characteristic is some color transfer. This occurs because the leather is finished to preserve its authentic, natural character. Furthermore, leather inevitably bears marks like bloodlines and wrinkles, evidence of the animal's life. Leather finished with transparent dyeing to highlight its natural qualities cannot conceal these marks. (Cheaper leathers are often dyed with opaque pigments to conceal bloodlines and grain patterns, resulting in a uniform finish. Some also undergo acrylic resin treatment to prevent color transfer, which creates an unnatural sheen and poor texture. This process strips the leather of its inherent character, defeating the purpose of using genuine leather.)
