About the Tokaido Fifty-Three Stations
The Tokaido was one of the five major highways established during the Edo period by the Tokugawa shogunate to unify the nation. It connected Tokyo's Nihonbashi to Kyoto's Sanjo Ohashi over a distance of 492 km. Fifty-three post stations were set up along the route to relay travelers and goods.
Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints depicting scenes along this highway are famous and were often featured in waka poetry and haiku.
About Nihonbashi
In 1603, the Edo shogunate built a wooden bridge over the Nihonbashi River.
It became the starting point of the Five Highways. Centered around Nihonbashi, numerous wholesalers, fish markets, and other businesses lined the streets. Above the river, many boats passed back and forth, and the area bustled daily with merchants, tourists, and many others.
In fire-prone Edo, it burned down and was rebuilt countless times. The current bridge is a stone structure built in 1911. About the Kit
