The Tōkaidō was one of the five major highways established during the Edo period by the Tokugawa shogunate to unify the nation. It connected Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Sanjō Ohashi in Kyoto, spanning 492 km. Fifty-three post stations were set up along the route to relay travelers and goods. Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints depicting scenes along this highway are famous and were often used as subjects for waka poetry and haiku. ・About Kamabara-juku

Located in present-day Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City.
Facing the Fuji River to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the south.
Boasting one honjin (main inn), two wakihonjin (auxiliary inns), and 45 ryokan (inns), it bustled with travelers crossing the Fuji River. This post station was the setting for Utagawa Hiroshige's “Kambara-juku at Night in the Snow” from his series “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō”.
It is the only snow scene in the series, depicting a world where travelers' footsteps crunch through the deepening snow in the silent night, almost audible to the viewer.
