▪️ This factory is the last remaining one in an area that was once a sock manufacturing district. Though the products have changed, this factory—which once produced socks for famous brands at its peak—continues making socks with the same values as back then. This factory houses numerous machines now almost unseen elsewhere in Japan. These machines differ from those driven by computer control, relentlessly pursuing “efficiency” to produce socks as quickly and in as large quantities as possible. Here, machine settings are adjusted to match the desired sock, and parts are sometimes swapped out. However, without deep knowledge not only of the machines but also of yarn characteristics and sock functionality, even the settings cannot be properly configured, making it impossible to create the socks they truly want to make. In a corner of Chiba Prefecture, we introduce socks crafted with unique functionality and comfort, based on solid techniques and knowledge built over many years, and designed around the concept of “socks we ourselves want to wear.”
▪️ Stress-Free Socks That Stretch Anywhere
▪️ Despite stretching this much, believe it or not, these socks use no elastic. These socks achieve remarkable elasticity by knitting them to over twice their normal size and then shrinking them. Pulling the leg of a typical sock stretches it to about 18-21cm. This sock stretches to about 30-31cm. To achieve this stretch, we spend over twice the time knitting slowly with a fine gauge compared to making a standard sock of the same length. Furthermore, socks are typically sized separately for women and men. Cheap socks are made to the absolute limit of their size, leaving no room for stretch. This makes them prone to holes forming at the toes, where stress is concentrated. These socks are denser than standard socks, making them stronger and longer-lasting. This fine gauge knitting was apparently a standard technique in Japanese-made socks of the past. This extra step, increasingly lost in the pursuit of efficiency and cost, is still carefully preserved here. Crucially, it's the sock itself that stretches, not the elastic, so it leaves no marks no matter how swollen your feet get.
