The AE86 Trueno, introduced in May 1983, deliberately adopted a rear-wheel drive layout in an era where front-wheel drive was standard, and also changed the engine from the previous generation's 2T-G to the newly developed 4A-G. Body variations included both a 3-door hatchback and a 2-door coupe, shared with its sibling model, the Levin. Model designations varied by engine: the 4A-G-equipped version was AE86, while the 1500cc 3A-U-equipped was AE85. Its popularity remains undiminished to this day.\
