Product Introduction
The upward-opening doors, commonly known as gullwing doors, can be considered one defining feature of super sports cars. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, nicknamed the “Gullwing,” debuted in 1954. Featuring the high performance and captivating form derived from the prototype sports car that excelled in 1952 races, it instantly captivated celebrities worldwide. Its multi-tube space frame represented cutting-edge racing technology at the time.
Because this frame was located on the body sides, conventional side-hinged doors were impossible. The gullwing doors were adopted as a structural necessity.
Furthermore, the body evolved from the smooth, low-drag prototype form into an elegant silhouette befitting a luxury sports car.
It is also renowned as one of the fastest cars of its time, powered by the world's first inline-six gasoline engine with direct fuel injection, delivering 215 horsepower. It continues to be the envy of enthusiasts today.
