A Fantasy of Light and Shadow
Pursuing love and hope through light and shadow for 73 years
Born in Tokyo in 1924. Graduated from Keio University, Faculty of Economics.
Began creating puppet theater while still a student; after graduation, formed the puppet troupe Théâtre de la Main (later renamed Mokuba-za).
Developed a unique shadow-puppet world. In 1948, serialized shadow-puppet illustrations in “Kurashi no Techo” magazine.
On the TV program “Kiba-za Hour,” his character “Kero-yon” achieved explosive popularity.
Received the Golden Apple Award at the Czech International Picture Book Illustration Exhibition in 1983, the Purple Ribbon Medal in 1989,
the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette in 1995, and the Special Contribution Award for Children's Culture from the Japan Children's Literature Association in 1999.
In 2013, opened the Fujishiro Seiji Museum of Art in Nasu Highlands, Tochigi Prefecture—Japan's only permanent museum dedicated to his work.
He continues to actively exhibit at various museums, inspiring countless people.
