Media Reviews and More
For Mahalia, who specializes in jazz, gospel, and African-American spirituals, gospel music is all about singing of joy and hope, and I believe she is someone whose meaning and purpose in life lie in that. What she possesses is a cheerfulness that allows her to walk through life with strength, while fully acknowledging the misery of reality and the negative values of life. She played a huge role in gospel music, and she truly deserves to be called a queen. She is remembered as one of the greatest singers in the gospel music world. Mahalia argues that blues are songs of despair, while gospel is songs of hope. I've written before that African-American spirituals, sung during difficult times, never forgot to express strong faith, hope, and joy, no matter how sad the lyrics. The same can be said of gospel music. Mahalia felt a sense of relief, as if released from a heavy burden, and a sense of joy, as if she had been healed of her sins, when she sang gospel music. She said that those who sing only the blues are like those stuck in a deep rut, crying out for help. Even after singing the blues, there's no peace left. Perhaps Mahalia wanted to assert that her way of life was completely different. In 1950, Mahalia became the first African-American to perform at Carnegie Hall. "The more I sang, the more people in the audience began to cry with joy," she later recalled. People were stomping their feet, screaming, and some even dancing while crying. One critic said, "When Mahalia sings, even the elevator attendants in the building start dancing."
In 1952, Mahalia went on her first European tour. At the time, very few people in Europe knew about gospel music, but the tour was a huge success, and it subsequently became wildly popular and commercialized. She continued singing until just before her death, and was a huge star who made gospel music known both at home and abroad. --CD/DVD Fair
About the Artist
Known as the "Queen of Gospel," Mahalia Jackson made a significant contribution to bringing religious music like gospel to the general public.
Influenced by blues singers, she brought blues and jazz-style singing to gospel, as well as a full-body performance style that included shaking her hips to the rhythm. In 1960, she became the first African-American to hold a concert at Carnegie Hall, reaching the pinnacle of the gospel music scene. At the 1964 civil rights march, she sang the traditional spiritual "I Been'buked and I Been's Scorned" before Dr. King's famous speech, "I Have a Dream," and at King's funeral, she sang the famous hymn "Precious Lord," scenes that African-Americans will never forget.
She passed away from a heart attack in 1972. Brand Name: Import 4961523380030 Mahalia Jackson/Amazing Grace AO-003 (text created at , 2025-05-09)
