Media Reviews and More
“Strange Fruit” is an expression coined by poet Lewis Allen, lamenting the tragic state of persecuted Black people hanging themselves or being executed. Billie Holiday, grieving the death of her father who died of illness after being mistreated by whites, co-wrote the song with Sonny White in 1939, making it her signature piece and achieving fame. Within her repertoire, which tended toward sad love ballads, this song became notable for its lyrics singing of the cruelty of racial discrimination through the image of her father. --cddvd Fair
Billie Holiday's life can be summed up in two words: utter misery. That is precisely why her songs penetrate deep into people's hearts, bodies, and very minds. And before you know it, you become one with Billie Holiday's sorrow. --cddvd Fair
In Billie Holiday's raspy voice, you can hear how desperately she craved love. Summertime is a song covered by countless singers... Billie Holiday's Summertime is a Summertime that conveys nothing but despair. --cddvd Fair
About the Artist
Born April 7, 1915, in Baltimore, Maryland, to a 15-year-old father and 13-year-old mother. Raped at age 10, she turned to prostitution in New York at 14 and was imprisoned for soliciting. After starting as a club singer, she became the exclusive vocalist for the Count Basie Orchestra in 1937. Her hit “Strange Fruit” in 1939 launched her career, and by the mid-1940s, she reached her peak, recording numerous legendary performances for posterity. However, Billy, who suffered greatly from widespread racial prejudice thereafter, rapidly descended into drug addiction due to her mental anguish. She continued singing in clubs and theaters throughout the 1950s, but was already mentally and physically exhausted. She died in New York on July 17, 1959. That she is the greatest female jazz vocalist in history is a universally acknowledged fact.
