Born December 18, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois. She began her professional career in 1939 and gained significant popularity and acclaim as a featured vocalist with Gene Krupa's band starting in 1941. After stints with Stan Kenton's orchestra, she went solo and established her status as a singer through numerous recordings on the Verve label. Her appearance at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, documented in the film “Midsummer Night's Jazz,” cemented her enduring popularity. She continued performing into recent years, including on self-produced albums. Her dynamic vocal style, mastering both swing and modern jazz, captivated many fans with its unique power. She was the foremost white female jazz vocalist, influencing numerous singers, including Chris Connor. She died of pneumonia on November 23, 2006, in a Los Angeles hospital. --cd dvd fair
