John Coltrane, a saxophonist in modern jazz. While primarily known for the tenor saxophone, he also played the alto saxophone in his earliest career, the soprano saxophone from the 1960s onward, and even recorded on the flute in his final years. His career spanned the golden age of hard bop in the 1950s, the era of modal jazz in the 1960s, and the era of free jazz, leaving a giant footprint in each era. After the death of Charlie Parker (alto saxophone), he became one of the most important figures in jazz saxophone, alongside Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone). For a long time, there was no one playing the tenor saxophone in modern jazz who was not influenced by Coltrane.
