Hasegawa - U.S. Army - P-38J Lightning - Virginia Marie
Product Description
1/48 scale plastic model. The P-38 Lightning was a unique twin-engine, twin-fuselage aircraft that stood out among American fighters during World War II. On February 11, 1939, it made a record flight across the North American continent from the west coast to the east coast, but failed to land at Mitchell Field in New York, overshot the runway, and was severely damaged. However, during this flight, it reached a maximum speed of 676 km/h with a tailwind, and the pilot was unharmed. Soon after the accident, Lockheed received orders for 13 YP-38s. Initially, the necessary mass production system was not in place, and the first YP-38 made its maiden flight on September 7, 1940.
The full production Model E abandoned the previous 37mm cannon, instead mounting a 20mm M1 cannon and four 12.7mm machine guns in the nose. This configuration became the standard for the P-38 series. Production continued with the F, G, and H models. Engine cooling issues in the J model were resolved by relocating the intercooler to just behind the propeller, beneath the engine nacelle. The P-38J, equipped with the new cooling system, enabled an emergency output of 1,600 hp (at 8,077 meters altitude) using the same V-1710-89/91 engine as the P-38H.
From the P-38J-25 model onward, electric dive flaps were adopted to eliminate buffeting (vibration caused by turbulent airflow hitting the tail surfaces). These flaps were used during dive recovery to redirect airflow from the wings, preventing this airflow from hitting the tail surfaces.
