1/48 scale plastic model.
The Type 5 Fighter was a type hastily converted to the air-cooled radial engine Ha-112 to address the increasing number of “headless” Hien fighters caused by production delays of the liquid-cooled Ha-104 engine.
To fit the radial engine, larger than the fuselage width, into a plane originally designed for a liquid-cooled engine, the Kawasaki design team led by Takeo Doi worked tirelessly and completed this modification in an extremely short time.
While the increased frontal area slightly reduced its maximum speed compared to the Hien, the removal of the cooling system improved climb performance. Furthermore, the overall balance became exceptionally good, dramatically enhancing its dogfighting capabilities and takeoff/landing characteristics. This enabled it to engage in air combat on equal terms, or even better, against the F-6F Hellcat and P-51D Mustang.
The Type 5 Fighter, which successfully completed its maiden flight in February 1945, was immediately prioritized for mass production as the hope for homeland air defense. It was deployed primarily to Squadron 244, Squadron 5, Squadron 59, and others, seeing active service in homeland defense. However, production was severely limited to only about 390 aircraft due to factory bombings during air raids, preventing it from becoming a major combat force before Japan's defeat.
