Product Description
The “Shiden Kai” evolved from the “Kōfū” floatplane fighter. Replacing the Kōfū's floats with wheels and equipped with the compact yet powerful Nakajima ‘Homare’ engine, the land-based fighter “Shiden” entered mass production in 1943 and was formally adopted in October 1944. However, as it had many unfinished aspects for a land-based fighter, the fuselage was redesigned, the wing position was changed from mid-wing on the Shiden to low-wing, and the automatic air combat flaps were improved. This resulted in the prototype of the full-fledged land-based local fighter “Shiden Kai” (N1K2-J), which was formally adopted in January 1945. Later production models of the Shiden Kai (N1K2-J) featured a reduced vertical stabilizer area compared to earlier versions. The most famous unit to systematically equip and operate the Shiden Kai was the 343rd Naval Air Group. On March 19, 1945, over Matsuyama, Shikoku, 54 Shiden Kai intercepted and engaged attacking F6F and SB2C aircraft from the U.S. Navy, achieving the combat result of 52 enemy aircraft shot down. F4U, and SB2C carrier-based aircraft attacking over Matsuyama, Shikoku. They achieved the feat of shooting down 52 enemy aircraft, demonstrating the Shiden Kai's excellence.
