Description
Hasegawa - Imperial Japanese Army - Type 1 Fighter - Plastic Model - JT80

Product Description
1/48 scale plastic model.
The first prototype was completed in December 1938. Test flight results showed it exceeded the Model 97 fighter's top speed by about 30 km/h, but its maneuverability was inferior, making it inadequate as the next-generation fighter. Consequently, various modifications were made, including changes to the wing area and engine replacement.
Around 1940, the Army General Staff believed long-range fighters were essential for convoy escort during the Southern Campaign's Singapore invasion. The Ki-43, on the verge of being scrapped, found new purpose as a long-range fighter. In April 1941, modified aircraft underwent testing and achieved the required range. Furthermore, its vertical maneuverability in dogfights proved superior. Consequently, in May 1941, it was formally adopted as the Type 1 Fighter. Between June and August of that year, the 59th Fighter Squadron received approximately 30 Type I fighters.
The Hayabusa Type I was primarily deployed to the Burma Theater, significantly contributing to the initial rapid advances there.
