Description
700 - Special Series - No. 73 - Japanese Navy Aviation Cruiser - Plastic Model Kit: The aircraft carrier Mogami, which boasted a vast aviation workshop space at the rear of the ship, now features new parts. This is an unpainted kit requiring glue assembly and painting. This 1/700 scale model does not include the bottom of the ship. It is constructed using the previous (Special Series) mold and newly added mold parts. The heavy cruiser Mogami was a "light cruiser" built under the London Naval Treaty. It was built with the intention of converting it to a heavy cruiser by replacing its guns once the treaty restrictions were lifted. The first ship, the Mogami, was completed at the Kure Naval Arsenal in 1935. Its displacement was insufficient for its armament, resulting in problems with recovery performance and strength. Reinforcement and improvement work was carried out, and in 1940, its main guns were replaced. The ship was equipped with ten 20.3 cm guns, replacing fifteen 15.5 cm guns, increasing its planned displacement from 8,500 tons to 12,400 tons. During the early stages of the Pacific War, the ship engaged in operations in the southern area. During the Battle of Midway in June 1942, it collided with its sister ship, the Mikuma, losing its bow and returning to Japan. During restoration work, the ship's rear was converted into an aircraft operation deck and modified to accommodate 11 floatplanes. Further modifications were made to the ship's guns and radar. Following the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the ship was damaged by an attack from a waiting American fleet during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. It was ultimately torpedoed and sunk by the destroyer Akebono. This type of ship, an improved and modified version of the previous Myoko-class cruiser, was built as a treaty cruiser. The first ship, the Takao, was completed at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal in 1932. Four other ships were built, along with the Atago, Chokai, and Maya. The ship was equipped with five 20.3 cm twin turrets with an elevation angle of 70 degrees, allowing for anti-aircraft fire. In 1939, the ship underwent a remodeling, reducing the bridge size, installing a bulge, and relocating the aft mast to improve communications. At the start of the war, the ship participated in the Southwestern Front Operation, but during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, it was torpedoed by a US submarine and lost combat capability, leading to a retreat. The war ended in Singapore, where it was seized by the British and sunk at sea. This product is based on the Mogami-class ship, the Mogami, as it appeared in 1943, when it was converted into an aircraft carrier. Features include the removal of the No. 4.5 main guns and the addition of a new aircraft operation deck, the installation of a No. 21 radar, and the expansion of the air defense command post and forward machine gun turrets of the bridge. New molds were used to standardize the accuracy of the equipment reproductions between product release dates, and some parts are divided to accommodate painting. The No. 21 radar, including the front insulator base for mounting the element, are more delicately sculpted than previous accessory parts. - The 12.7cm twin anti-aircraft gun A1 Kai 1 is subdivided into 6 parts, with improved modeling resolution from the existing 2-part model. - The 9-meter cutter is made into 2 parts to allow for painting, and the mount is available as a separate part, with the option of a one-piece deck mold. - The 11-meter motorboat has separate parts for the canvas and wheelhouse/engine room canopy to allow for painting. Each part is painted and then assembled and glued later. - The 12-meter motorboat launch can also be recreated without the canvas. - The boat mount's uneven shape and light holes are molded to enhance the sense of precision. - New parts are used for the chrysanthemum crest on the bow and the sidelights on the bridge side. - Binocular telescope parts have been added to the air defense command post and compass bridge. - Decals have been added for the stern ship's name (filled in naval colors) and the white line on the mast. The Type 96 25mm machine gun is now available in a two-part configuration as standard, reducing the painting and painting work required. Hull: The hull features a one-piece construction with the port and starboard sides molded as a single unit, allowing for a more stable assembly than a jointed assembly. The side bulges are recreated as separate parts. These parts are exclusive to aircraft cruisers to recreate the portholes, which were reduced in number at the start of the war as a measure to make the ship unsinkable. Upper Deck: The upper deck is a single part, with detailed engravings on the linoleum deck retainers and the iron deck's anti-slip surface. Ventilation ducts and reels are depicted as an integral part of the deck, and the anti-slip split pattern below the aircraft operating deck is delicately carved. Decks: Various features are recreated, including machine gun ammunition boxes, single machine gun mounting points, and hose reels. The shelter deck is a separate part, accurately recreating the torpedo equipment compartment below. - The aircraft work deck is a single part, and the truss girder shape on the underside is also expressed. Bridge - The base of the bridge structure is a single piece part with carvings on all four sides using a slide mold. - The enlarged shape of the machine gun turret in front of the bridge is expressed with a dedicated part. Main turret - The joints of the heat shielding plates on the sides and top of the turret are expressed with detailed carvings. Funnel - Both the front and rear funnels are split into left and right sections, and the handrails and double scaffolding are expressed with delicate carvings. - The rain grille on the funnel can be removed to allow a view into the inner tube side. - The steam exhaust pipe is a separate part from the funnel, increasing the level of precision. Mast and aircraft equipment - Aft mast
