Description
Fujimi Models - Imperial Japanese Navy Series - No. 51 - Japanese Navy Aviation Cruisers - FH-51
The aviation cruiser “Mogami,” featuring a vast aviation work area at the stern, is now available as a full hull type with newly added molds.\
\
Scale is 1/700, featuring a full hull specification including the ship's bottom. \
Assembly requires adhesive; painting is necessary.\
The heavy cruiser “Mogami” was originally built as a “light cruiser” under the London Naval Treaty.\
Constructed with the intention of upgrading to heavy cruiser status by replacing guns once treaty restrictions were lifted, the lead ship Mogami was completed at Kure Naval Arsenal in 1935. \
Its displacement proved insufficient for its armament, leading to stability and structural integrity issues.\
Reinforcement and improvement work was carried out, culminating in the replacement of the main guns in 1940.\
The armament changed from 15 × 15.5 cm guns to 10 × 20.3 cm guns, increasing the displacement from the planned 8,500 tons to 12,400 tons. \
During the early Pacific War, she operated in the Southern Area. In June 1942 during the Midway Operation, she collided with her sister ship, the Mikuma, lost her bow, and returned to Japan. \
During repairs, it underwent modifications to convert the stern into an aircraft operating deck, with plans to carry 11 seaplanes.\
Further upgrades included increased machine gun armament and the addition of radar equipment. After participating in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, it was damaged by the waiting U.S. fleet during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Ultimately, it was sunk by torpedoes fired from the destroyer Akebono. \
