Kinkaku-ji originated as the Kitayama-den villa built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397. After Yoshimitsu's death, his son Yoshimitsu converted it into a Zen temple. Its official name is Rokuon-ji, but it is commonly called Kinkaku-ji due to the immense fame of the Golden Pavilion within its grounds. In 1994, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto”.
