This photograph captures the concrete arch bridge over Lake Kōhei in Kamishihoro Town, Hokkaido, against the backdrop of the Milky Way night sky.
This bridge was constructed over the Taisetsu River when the former Japanese National Railways Shihoro Line opened in 1939. It remained in use until 1955.
Today, it stands preserved within the artificial dam lake of Lake Kōhei.
Since Lake Nukabira is an artificial dam lake for power generation, the bridge is sometimes completely submerged depending on the season and power generation schedules, while at other times the water level drops, revealing the entire structure.
This phenomenon has earned it the nickname “Phantom Bridge.”
The starry sky stretching across the night sky resembles a scene from Kenji Miyazawa's masterpiece, “Night on the Galactic Railroad.”
Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1968. With extensive astronomical knowledge and exceptional artistic sensibility, he depicts the worlds of space and mythology. A global pioneer of ‘digital painting,’ creating artwork entirely on computers. His ‘the Zodiac 12 Constellation Series’ is a bestseller in jigsaw puzzles.
