Product Description
Pit Road 1/700 Skywave Series U.S. Navy Heavy Cruiser CA-72 Pittsburgh 1944 Plastic Model Kit W260
Pittsburgh was commissioned in October 1944 as the fifth ship of the Baltimore-class heavy cruisers, constructed after the Washington Naval Treaty expired. In addition to three triple 20.3 cm main guns, she was equipped with six twin 12.7 cm secondary guns and numerous 40 mm and 20 mm machine guns for enhanced anti-aircraft armament. After being deployed to the Pacific, she participated in the Iwo Jima landing operation. In March 1945, after rescuing and towing the severely damaged aircraft carrier CV-13 Franklin during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, she participated in the Battle of Okinawa as a direct escort for the carrier task force, but lost her bow due to a typhoon. She returned to Guam without her bow and was undergoing repairs when the war ended.
