Description
Design Encyclopedia of Folk Tools - Design Concepts Revealed Through Everyday Objects - Musashino Art University - Folk Art Museum
■ Finding Design Inspiration in Folk Tools
Folk tools, born from people's daily lives without specific designers, hold design ideas that are inherently practical and logical for the body and the context of living.
While folk tools are typically classified and organized by “purpose” such as clothing, food, and shelter, this book reframes the rich world of folk tool design by focusing on form, function, material, and meaning.
Through topics like “Wrapping Oneself in a Small Forest,” “The Form of Mending,” and “Painting Scenes with Cloth,” and using abundant visuals, it interprets the appeal of folk tools across their uses.
The featured folk tools are carefully selected from the approximately 90,000-piece collection held by the Musashino Art University Folk Materials Room. This collection, initiated under the guidance of folklorist Tsuneichi Miyamoto, boasts one of Japan's most significant holdings, including household utensils, folk toys, and religious artifacts.
