The 103 Series is a commuter train introduced in 1963, with over 3,400 cars manufactured in total.
The Sengoku Line connects Aoba-dori Station in Miyagi Prefecture to Ishinomaki Station. This line is the only DC electrified section on JR lines in the Tohoku region. Following the privatization and division of the Japanese National Railways, the 103 series was inherited by JR East. Among these, the cars introduced to the Sengoku Line starting in 1989 underwent body renewal work aimed at improving performance and other factors.
This refurbishment changed the front windows to a split design unique to the Sengoku Line, replaced the passenger doors and side window sashes, and converted the front destination display to a route indicator.
Furthermore, starting around 1998, they were gradually repainted in a new blue and white scheme.
This model reproduces the appearance of formations including the Kumoha 103 type, repainted with the new livery while retaining the roof ventilators.
By using a separately sold power unit and N gauge running parts, it can be operated as an N gauge model train.
The recommended power unit is TM-18 (20m-class D), the running gear sets are TT-03R (for KuHa 103/SaHa 103) and TT-05 (for KuMoHa 103/MoHa 102), and the pantograph is PS16P [0230].
