About the Tokaido Fifty-Three Stations
The Tokaido was one of the five major highways established during the Edo period by the Tokugawa shogunate to unify the nation. It connected Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto, spanning 492 km. Fifty-three post stations were established along this route to relay travelers and goods.
Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints depicting scenes along this highway are famous and were often featured in waka poetry and haiku.
About Otsu-juku
Located south of Lake Biwa, Otsu-juku was the 53rd and final post town on the Tōkaidō. It flourished as the gateway to Kyoto, boasting the largest population and post town facilities.
As a transport hub to Kyoto, Otsu saw many oxcarts arrive laden with accumulated goods like rice bales and charcoal bales. The roadway for oxcarts and the footpath for travelers were clearly separated.
The path for people and horses was on the left side heading toward Kyoto, while the right side featured stone pavers called kurumaishi, laid to prevent oxcart wheels from sinking into mud.
The well where clear water gushed forth vigorously was called “Hashiri-i” (Running Well). It quenched travelers' thirst and continues to flow without ceasing to this day.
