This unique paper instantly expands to approximately 7 times its thickness when soaked in water. Normally about 1.3mm thick, it swells to a sponge-like state of about 10mm when wet. While the thickness changes, the width remains largely unchanged. It can be easily cut with scissors or a cutter. Cutting before swelling makes detailed trimming easier.
After drying, it can be glued together using wood glue to create large three-dimensional works. Once dry, water-based, acrylic, or oil paints can be applied directly to the surface. Additionally, dipping the sponge paper into water mixed with paint allows for simultaneous dyeing and swelling. It can be used as a flat material for artwork, or the surface can be torn or carved to create sculptural pieces with texture and depth. Its lightweight nature makes it an interesting material for creating three-dimensional mobile artworks.
