Description
Todaya Shoten - Riyen Some - Tenugui - Edo Kiriko - 915
Toda-ya Shoten, founded in Nihonbashi in 1872.
'Nien-zome' is the main brand of Toda-ya Shoten Co., Ltd., a manufacturer and wholesaler of tenugui and yukata.
We deliver products inspired by the world of Nien, or Kabuki, creating new items while preserving traditional culture.
Enjoy the quality born from carefully selected materials and artisan craftsmanship, and the elegance within everyday life.
Nien-zome tenugui are largely handmade, from the stencil creation to the dyeing and the final finishing step of the tatami-style folding.
The warmth of hand-dyeing, unattainable by machine production, gives Nien-zome its deep character.
Nien-zome embodies both “traditional craftsmanship” and “contemporary Japan.”
【 Features 】
The defining characteristic of Nien-zome is “Chusen Dyeing”.
This designated traditional craft dyeing method ensures even coloration on both sides. The beauty of the hues and the fine texture are achieved solely through the hand-dyeing by skilled artisans. Additionally, Riyen-zome uses its own original fabrics, meticulously selecting high-quality bleached cotton for its tenugui and yukata.
【 Design 】
“Traditional patterns in innovative colors · Innovative motifs using traditional techniques”
This is the design concept of Riyen-zome.
Rather than faithful reproduction of the past, we breathe new life into traditional designs, transforming them to suit the times.
This evolution gives birth to unique, new designs.
Furthermore, Riyo-zome takes pride in its overwhelming variety of patterns, unmatched by others.
Kiriko refers to patterns carved into glassware. It is said to have originated in 1834 when Kagaya Kyubei, a glassware merchant in Odenmacho, carved designs onto glass surfaces. The traditional glass technique passed down to the present day was established through the advanced cutting techniques taught by the British craftsman Hope Tomman in the early Meiji period. Today, it is designated as a Traditional Craft of Tokyo and a National Traditional Craft. ※“Edo Kiriko” is a registered trademark of the Edo Kiriko Cooperative Association※ Design Collaboration: Edo Kiriko Cooperative Association, Kagami Crystal Co., Ltd., Hirota Glass Co., Ltd., Mitsuwa Glass Craft Co., Ltd., Shimizu Glass Co., Ltd.
