This is Yasujiro Ozu's first film directed after the war. In Tokyo shortly after the war, there were many war orphans who had lost their parents. A man (Chishu Ryu) who took in one such child ends up leaving the child with a woman (Choko Iida). The woman finds the child unbearably bothersome and tries to abandon it somewhere, but it doesn't go smoothly. Gradually, she develops affection for the child, and a bond like that of a real parent and child forms between them. But...
