The Hotel-class nuclear-powered submarines were ballistic missile submarines operated by the Soviet Navy, representing the first type equipped with nuclear propulsion.
Subtypes 1-3 existed, with eight vessels commissioned between 1960 and 1962.
Developed as a successor to the conventionally powered Golf-class submarines, the Hotel I class had the drawback of being unable to launch ballistic missiles unless surfaced. Consequently, all vessels underwent modification in the 1960s to the Project 658M (Hotel II class), which was equipped with the R-21 submarine-launched ballistic missile capable of underwater launch.
