Became a second-level performer (Nitsume) as Shinji in 1948. Promoted to master performer (Shin'uchi) in 1958. Assumed the name Bunji in March 1979.
Known for his Edo-style humor and comedic material, he also practiced Nanga painting.
Appointed Chairman of the Rakugo Art Association in 1998.
