About the Artist
Ella Fitzgerald was born in April 1917 in Newport News, Virginia, and grew up in Yonkers, New York. Her parents divorced shortly after her birth. Her father disappeared after the divorce, and at age 14, her mother died in a car accident, leaving her an orphan. “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” topped the charts for 17 weeks, and the album sold over a million copies. In her later years, Ella became blind due to diabetes. In 1993, she underwent surgery to have both legs amputated and withdrew from the public eye. She died on April 25, 1996, in Beverly Hills, California. Her remains were interred at Inglewood Cemetery. For future research, personal documents and portions of Ella's estate are preserved at the Smithsonian Institution, Boston University Library, and the Library of Congress.
