Iga ware is pottery produced in the mountain villages around Iga City, Mie Prefecture, separated from Shigaraki in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, by a single mountain range.
▪️ It flourished from the late 7th to the 8th century. Initially producing items like seed pots, it gained renown as tea ceremony ware during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Today, production thrives on earthenware pots and heat-resistant ceramics, leveraging the high fire resistance of the clay.
▪️ Like Shigaraki ware, Iga ware differs in character from typical porcelain. It offers diverse ways to appreciate the inherent qualities of the clay and the glaze.
▪️ Earthenware (tsuchimono) is absorbent and breathable. Its glaze features craquelure (fine surface cracks, not cracks in the clay body).
