Description
Hasegawa - US Marine Corps - AV-8B Harrier - Plastic Model Kit
1/72 scale plastic model kit.
The Harrier, the world's first operational V/STOL attack aircraft, debuted in the early 1960s. Adopted by the US Marine Corps as the AV-8A, the AV-8B Harrier II was developed to improve its payload and range limitations. The main wings were enlarged, featuring a supercritical airfoil section. LERX (Leading Edge Root Extensions) were added at the wing roots for aerodynamic improvement. Furthermore, extensive use of composite materials minimized weight. The auxiliary landing gear under the wings was moved from the wingtips to the mid-wing section, increasing the number of underwing hardpoints by two.
Meanwhile, the avionics underwent significant modernization. The nose was equipped with the Angular Rate Bombing System (ARBS), first operationalized on the A-4M Skyhawk, dramatically improving weapon delivery accuracy. Furthermore, the adoption of a multi-purpose display and HOTAS (Hands-On Throttle-And-Stick) controls (allowing operation of various systems without removing hands from the stick or throttle). The canopy was enlarged, providing a wider field of view and enhancing piloting comfort.
Other improvements included modified air intakes and the adoption of zero-scarf nozzles for the forward exhaust, enhancing thrust efficiency. During VTOL operations, newly added retractable forward fences and enlarged, existing removable strakes—collectively known as Lift Improvement Devices (LIDS)—enabled effective utilization of ground effect jet lift.
The aerial refueling system features a retractable refueling probe.
The first operational deployment occurred with VMA-331 in 1985.
