700 - Special Series - No. 99 - Imperial Japanese Navy Heavy Cruiser - Plastic Model Kit Introduction
The modified Suzuya-class heavy cruiser "Ibuki" is back with newly added molded parts.
This is an unpainted kit that requires gluing and painting.
This is a 1/700 scale underwater model that does not include the hull.
This product is made up of both the previous (Special Series) molds and newly added molds.
The heavy cruiser "Ibuki" was planned in November 1941, one month before the outbreak of war, as a (urgent) plan to replenish wartime losses. Construction began at the Kure Naval Arsenal.
To shorten construction time, construction began on the later Mogami-class Suzuya. An air defense command center was installed early on, the aft mast was moved aft to improve radio communication capabilities, and the torpedo armament was changed from four quadruple launchers to four (the Mogami class had triple launchers). Launched in April 1943, the ship was ranked low in the construction order after the loss of the main aircraft carriers in the Battle of Midway. It was converted into a light aircraft carrier in August, and the Sasebo Naval Arsenal was in charge. It was a phantom cruiser that was only 80% complete when the war ended. This product is based on the appearance of the first modified Suzuya-class ship, the Ibuki, as it would have appeared if completed as a wartime heavy cruiser. It features exclusive parts, such as the aft mast position and torpedo tubes, which differ from the Mogami class. New molds were used to standardize the level of detail in equipment and other details depending on the product release date, and some parts are divided to accommodate painting. The No. 13 radar features a sculpted truss structure and a new molded part with a realistic antenna shape. The No. 21 radar is a two-part structure consisting of the rear support wire and the main body, and the front side features a sculpted base for the insulator used to secure the element. The large No. 21 radar installed on the destroyer Akizuki is included as a bonus part. It is constructed in two parts: the main body and the base of the support strut. The No. 22 radar is made using a slide mold, allowing for the open state to be recreated, and the trumpet-shaped form can also be extended. Bonus parts for fictional ship modelers include the No. 23 radar with a circular antenna and the No. 32 radar with a square antenna. The 12.7cm twin anti-aircraft gun A1 Kai 1 is subdivided into six parts, improving the modeling resolution from the existing two-part model. The 9-meter cutter is made into two parts for paintability, and the mount is available as a separate part, with the option of being molded as an integrated deck. The 12-meter motorized launch can also be recreated without the canvas. The 11-meter motorized boat has separate canvas and wheelhouse/engine room canopies for paintability. Each part is painted, and assembly and gluing are performed later. The ship's boat mount features molded irregularities and light holes, enhancing the sense of precision. The chrysanthemum crest on the bow is newly included.
-New sidelights and lifebuoys have been prepared. The former are used to standardize the size of each ship, while the latter are used to add detail to previously omitted parts.
-Decals have been added for the stern ship name (filled in naval colors) and the white mast line.
-The Type 96 25mm twin machine gun now comes standard in a two-part configuration, reducing the amount of painting required.
Hull Structure
-Hull parts with the same cross-section as the late Mogami-class ships "Suzuya" and "Kumano" are provided.
-The portholes are reproduced in a closed position based on lessons learned from battle.
Bridge/Foremast
-The forward mast is equipped with one No. 21 radar, two No. 22 radars, and an E27 sounder. The No. 22 radar in particular is extremely small but realistically sculpted.
-The bridge windows are provided as transparent parts for a more realistic finish. The anti-aircraft systems installed on both sides of the bridge are Type 94 anti-aircraft systems (the Mogami class is equipped with Type 91 anti-aircraft systems). The floors of the air defense command post and compass bridge feature delicate grating sculpted to create a realistic look. The air defense command post comes with a binocular telescope part that adds a touch of precision. Chimney/Air Inlet/Linoleum Deck The slender chimney, characteristic of the 10-boiler system found on the Suzuya and Kumano, is included. The funnel caps are molded as "open" parts. The steam exhaust pipes are separate parts designed to enhance the sense of precision. Aft Mast/Crane/Depth Charge Weaponry The aft mast is a special part installed just before the No. 4 turret, featuring a floatplane hoisting and storage crane and a Type 13 radar in the opposite position compared to the Suzuya. The stern includes a depth charge track and depth charges as special parts for anti-submarine weaponry. Shelter Deck/Aircraft Operation Deck
-The shelter section, where the torpedo tubes are installed, recreates the spare torpedo bay.
-The torpedo tubes are the quadruple tubes originally planned for the ship, and are recreated using dedicated parts made with new molds.
-The torpedo tubes can be mounted at any angle, along the bow-and-stern line, or rotated to launch.
-The Kure Type 2 Catapult (Kure Type 5) features realistic side and top shaping using slide molds.
25mm Machine Gun
-In addition to the parts included in the kit, the 25mm machine guns (triple/twin/single) also include precision machine gun parts with separate barrels and mounts.
-The design allows for easy assembly by simply painting the parts in gunmetal and warship colors, then assembling and gluing the runners together.
