The Taigei-class submarines are the successor to the Soryu-class. The lead ship, Taigei, entered service in March 2022.
While resembling the Soryu class externally, it features lithium-ion batteries enabling higher capacity and output, improving its submerged endurance.
The fourth vessel, Raigei, was launched in October 2023 and is scheduled to enter service in March 2025.
