Reptile and Amphibian Care and Breeding Guide: From Popular Species to Those Coveted by Enthusiasts—Introducing Domestic Breeding Data and Care Methods by Nobuhiro Kawazoe

An advanced care manual enabling proper reptile and amphibian husbandry and breeding. Given the increasing number of species prohibited from capture and keeping due to wildlife conservation concerns, this guide is edited around the concept of breeding and maintaining them through successive generations. An essential volume for anyone wishing to share their life with reptiles and amphibians. With growing trends toward conserving rare species and various laws enacted domestically and internationally, strong emphasis is now placed on “long-term keeping” and “breeding.” The CITES Convention lists numerous species, and domestically, the number of designated rare domestic plants and animals—treated equivalent to Natural Monuments—is increasing. For example, the Tokyo Salamander was recently designated as a Class II Specified Species, prohibiting its capture, transfer, or sale for commercial purposes. Meanwhile, due to threats from invasive species, the popular pet chameleon-like species is now treated as an unclassified invasive alien species, effectively banning its import. Consequently, only captive-bred chameleon-like individuals bred domestically will circulate in the future. Increased circulation of captive-bred individuals reduces pressure on wild populations, ultimately contributing to the conservation of animals in their natural habitats. Similar trends are evident not only in Japan but also in other countries, where restrictions are placed on the capture volume for commercial circulation locally, or regulations are imposed on animal exports. Due to factors like the COVID-19 pandemic making exports difficult, import volumes into Japan have decreased in recent years. Simply put, species that were once common are now completely absent from the market, and prices have skyrocketed. This trend is expected to intensify, making the establishment of breeding techniques for each species (specifically within Japan) highly anticipated. Against this backdrop, this book provides a starting point for correctly understanding how to interact with reptiles and amphibians from the perspective of keeping and breeding them.
