1/48 scale plastic model.
The Sikorsky HSS-2B Sea King is an anti-submarine helicopter used by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
The JMSDF initially operated the HSS-2 and HSS-2A, but switched to the HSS-2B variant starting with the fiscal year 1977 procurement batch.
The HSS-2B is essentially equivalent to the US Navy's SH-3H, featuring enhanced anti-submarine detection equipment.
Its anti-submarine detection systems include the HQS-102 dipping sonar, HPS-102 search radar, ASQ-81B (V)-2 magnetic anomaly detector (MAD), and AN/ALR-66 electronic support measures (ESM) countermeasure equipment. It also carries twelve sonobuoy launchers. However, since the aircraft itself lacks sonobuoy analysis equipment, when sonobuoy signals are received, the data is relayed to the mother ship via a data link system.
The HSS-2B carries a Tactical Data Display System (TDDS) that comprehensively processes data from onboard sensors. This enables instant display of essential data on the scope, significantly reducing crew workload and markedly improving operational flight precision.
The HSS-2B comes in land-based and carrier-based variants. The carrier-based version is equipped with a hydraulic winch for deploying and retrieving the hold-down cable, which serves as the shipboard restraint system.
