Product Description
In 1936 (Showa 11), the Imperial Japanese Navy ordered three companies—Aichi, Nakajima, and Mitsubishi—to develop prototype carrier-based dive bombers. Mitsubishi abandoned development midway, leaving Aichi and Nakajima to compete in developing the prototype.
Aichi developed an all-metal low-wing monoplane featuring aerodynamically superior elliptical tapered wings for the main and tail surfaces. Prioritizing practicality, it employed fixed landing gear and equipped dive brakes on the wing underside. The prototype made its maiden flight in 1938. Subsequent flight tests revealed issues like unexpected spins where the aircraft would roll uncontrollably and heavy elevator/rudder controls, requiring time-consuming modifications. However, its superior speed and maneuverability compared to the rival Nakajima design led to its formal adoption in 1939 as the Type 99 Carrier-Based Dive Bomber Model 11 (D3A1). It achieved remarkable success in the early war years, boasting a high hit rate in its bombing missions.
