Description
Hasegawa - Royal Air Force - Typhoon - Mk IB - With Teardrop Windscreen
Product Description
1/48 scale plastic model kit.
During the development of the Typhoon, work proceeded on both the Type N, powered by a Napier Sabre engine, and the Type R, powered by a Rolls-Royce Bartsch engine. The Type R, named the Tornado, made its maiden flight first in October 1939. The Type N, named Typhoon, had its first flight in February 1940 due to delays in the development of the engine itself. Although its high-speed flight characteristics were considered quite good, it was judged to have a strong tendency to swing to the right during takeoff.
Subsequently, the Tornado was discontinued due to difficulties in practical application caused by problems with the supplied engines. On the other hand, the Typhoon IA, equipped with the new Sabre IIA engine, went into production, followed immediately by the IB, equipped with cannons, which was rushed into practical use.
However, because it was deployed in combat without sufficient practical testing, problems occurred in various areas, leading to a fatal accident in which the entire tail section was damaged.
Nevertheless, at the time, the Typhoon was the only aircraft faster than the Fw 190 at low altitudes, and its four 20mm cannons could obliterate enemies in a single hit.
The problematic tail defect was also resolved. From November 1942, during attacks on German-occupied continental Europe, it destroyed airfields, ships, railways, and other targets, achieving significant combat successes.
