1/48 scale plastic model kit.
The Zero Model 21, which had maintained its early war success, began to show inferiority in speed and firepower against the new American Army and Navy fighters appearing one after another in 1943.
Thus, following the Model 32 and Model 22, the Model 52 was developed. Its wingspan was reduced from 12m on the Model 21 and 22 to 11m. The cowling was redesigned and equipped with a thrust-type single exhaust pipe to improve speed. As a result, its maximum speed reached 565 km/h, 25 km/h faster than the Model 22. The Model 52-A was produced, featuring replacement of the in-wing 20mm machine guns with belt-fed Type 99 Model 2 Type 4 20mm machine guns and thicker main wing skins to increase the dive speed limit. However, the Navy's demands continued. The Model 52-B featured reinforcement of the right-side 7.7mm machine gun in the nose section with a 13mm machine gun, and the Model 52 Type C, which added 13mm machine guns outside the existing 20mm machine guns on both main wings of the Type B. Approximately 6,000 aircraft of the Model 52 series were produced by Nakajima and Mitsubishi, continuing to see combat until the end of the Pacific War.
