Description
Special Series - No. 70 - Japanese Navy Heavy Cruiser - 1942 - Plastic Model Kit Product Introduction
The Mikuma, which was upgraded to a heavy cruiser with the replacement of its main guns, is back with newly designed common parts.
This is an unpainted kit that requires assembly and painting.
The scale is 1/700, and this underwater model does not include the ship's bottom.
This product is composed of the previous (Special Series) mold and a new additional mold.
This product is based on the Mogami-class second ship, the Mikuma, from the start of the Pacific War to the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
The hull cross-section is different from that of the Suzuya and Kumano, and the standard portholes at the start of the war are shown in their unobstructed state with special parts.
New molds were used to standardize the accuracy of equipment reproductions due to product release dates, and some parts are divided to accommodate painting.
The 12.7cm Twin Anti-Angle Gun A1 Kai 1 is divided into six parts, improving the modeling resolution from the existing two-part model. The 9-meter cutter is made into two parts to allow for easy painting, and the mount is available as a separate part, with the option of a one-piece molded deck. The 12-meter motorized launch can now be recreated without the canvas. The 11-meter motorized boat has the canvas and wheelhouse/engine room canopy made into separate parts to allow for painting. Each part is painted first, and then assembled and glued together later. The shipboard mount's uneven shape and light holes are molded to enhance the sense of precision. A new chrysanthemum crest has been added for the bow. New sidelights and life buoys have been added. The former are to standardize the size of each ship, and the latter are to add expression to parts that were previously omitted. Decals have been added for the stern ship name (filled in naval colors) and the white line of the mast. The Type 96 25mm twin machine gun now comes standard as a two-part part, which reduces the amount of painting required.
Hull Structure
- The hull of the Mogami and Mikuma, with their large side slopes at the mid-deck level, is reproduced using special parts.
- The portholes, which differ from those of the aircraft carrier Mogami, are reproduced in their unobstructed state.
- The external electrical wiring is molded as a single unit into the hull, recreating individual differences such as differences in the position near the stern and the higher position in the center.
- The central section of the external electrical wiring, which differs from that of the Mogami, is enclosed using special etched parts. Some parts are machined and attached to recreate the design.
- The width of the ship near the shelter deck is 1.0 mm wider (on the model) than that of the Suzuya/Kumano.
Bridge/Foremast
- The forward mast is unique to the Mogami/Mikuma and reproduces the difference in height (slightly lower) compared to the Suzuya.
- The observation post equipped with the Type 92 torpedo launch control system, a feature from the time of the outbreak of war, is reproduced.
- The bridge windows are provided with transparent parts for a more realistic finish.
- The floors of the air defense command post and compass bridge feature delicate gratings with delicate carvings.
- Dedicated parts are used to recreate the boiler room air intakes on both sides of the rear of the bridge, which are only found on the Mogami/Mikuma.
- Chimney/Air Intake/Linoleum Deck
- The deck access hatches are designed to minimize complexity by minimizing the height and avoiding paint separation at hatch height.
- The Mogami/Mikuma are equipped with 12 boilers, and the thick, two-pronged chimney at the front is recreated with dedicated parts.
- The funnel caps are molded parts that appear "loose."
- The steam exhaust pipes are separate parts designed to enhance the sense of precision and are dedicated to the Mogami/Mikuma.
- The boiler room air intake below the chimney has a smaller intake surface on the Mogami/Mikuma, which differentiates it from the Suzuya with dedicated parts.
-Special parts are used for the machine gun turret next to the funnel to recreate the unique outline shape of the Mogami/Mikuma.
-A V-shaped air intake behind the funnel (below the searchlight), a feature unique to the Mogami/Mikuma.
-Special parts are used for the linoleum deck, as the placement of the ventilation shafts and equipment differs from that of the Suzuya/Kumano.
Anti-Air-Ground Gun Mount/Antenna Support
-The 12.7cm twin anti-aircraft gun mount is a special part for the Mogami/Mikuma, with a flat underside.
-The antenna support mounted on the canopy of the No. 3/4 main gun turret is a special part that recreates the unique shape of each ship.
Aft Mast/Aft Bridge/Crane
-The aft mast has a Y-shaped, rearward-sloping top and is a special part for the Mogami/Mikuma.
