Light Pencils, Time Clay: A Special Lesson Connecting Art and Media - Toshio Iwai
This book fully documents media artist Toshio Iwai's special lesson conducted at an elementary school, bridging “art” and “media.” This book reveals not only the teaching methodology but also the present and future of children's education, and the relationship between people, media, and technology.
Media artist Toshio Iwai conducted this “special class” at an elementary school in Mitaka City in October 2008. Based on his own artistic practice and experience, the lessons featured different curricula tailored to each grade level. They utilized new forms of ‘media’ that had previously been difficult to incorporate into educational settings, such as “light,” “time,” “movement,” sound,“ and ”communication“—new forms of ‘media’ that had been difficult to incorporate into traditional educational settings.
”Today's children are surrounded by high-tech devices like televisions, computers, games, and mobile phones, constantly exposed to images and information streamed from various media. Compared to the past when children devised their own play, I feel that both play and creativity are now confined within predetermined frameworks, even having their goals dictated, preventing children from fully exercising their innate free thinking and creativity. At that moment, I began wondering how we could help children rediscover the joy of thinking for themselves and creating something new. Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to conduct a special class for all grades at my daughter's elementary school. I poured my heart and soul into the lessons, striving to connect art with media." (From the “Introduction”) This book fully documents the lesson content and underlying philosophy, accompanied by numerous visuals including images of children engaged in creating their works and illustrations of the finished pieces. It offers insights not only for educators but also for parents of children the same age, and those involved in film, media, technology, art, and design. It serves as a catalyst for reflecting on the present and future of children and schools, and the relationship between people and media/technology.
