Product Description
Hyūga was the second ship of the Ise-class battleships, completed in April 1918 at Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard. Construction of the Ise-class battleships was significantly delayed due to the financial constraints of the era. Originally planned as the Fuso-class, lessons learned from the Battle of Jutland revealed numerous flaws in that design. Consequently, this class was redesigned and launched as the modified Fuso-class to address those shortcomings. While their appearance closely resembles the Fuso-class, differences can be seen in the arrangement of the gun turrets. While the aircraft carrier task forces and air units were active, the battleship fleet spent its time training at Hashirajima Anchorage. After losing four main carriers at Midway, the Navy decided to convert battleships into aircraft carriers. The ships selected for this conversion were the Hyūga and her sister ship, the Ise. Thus, in August 1943 (Showa 18), an unprecedented hybrid aircraft carrier/battleship was completed: the aircraft battleship. Its fifth and sixth turrets were removed, and a flight deck was installed at the stern. Its aircraft complement consisted of the Suisei Type 33 and Zuiun. The 634th Air Group, dedicated to the Ise and Hyūga, was also formed and began rigorous training. Aircraft operations involved using catapults for launch, but since they couldn't land, they were supposed to return to nearby carriers or land bases. However, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Air Group 634 was taken away to serve as a decoy force, leaving the ships bare. Yet, the Hyūga and Ise fought valiantly with outstanding maneuverability and battleship-level anti-aircraft fire, returning safely. Subsequently, they successfully carried out Operation Kita, delivering ground troops to Singapore and returning to the mainland fully loaded with strategic supplies, including gasoline. Safety Warning For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Store away from open flames or direct heat sources.
