Product Description
Like its namesake ship Shōhō, Zuihō was first launched in June 1936 as the oiler Takasaki. However, during construction, plans were changed to convert her into a submarine tender. Furthermore, as it became certain her completion would occur after the deadline of the London Naval Treaty, plans were altered again, and she was completed as a light aircraft carrier. Thus, Zuihō was completed in December 1940 (Showa 15), a full year before Shōhō, who had been completed as a submarine tender before being converted into an aircraft carrier. By the time war broke out in December 1941 (Showa 16), Zuihō was forming the 3rd Air Fleet with Hōshō. However, as this was the era of full-fledged aircraft carriers, she likely served more as a training vessel. (1941), she formed the 3rd Air Squadron with the Hōshō, but as this was the era of full-fledged carriers, she likely served more as a training vessel. During the Battle of Midway in June 1942 (Showa 17), she was assigned to the assault force, the 2nd Fleet, conducting aerial reconnaissance with her aircraft. However, she was separated from the damaged 1st Carrier Division and did not participate in the actual battle. Subsequent reorganizations saw her assigned to the 1st Carrier Division of the 5th Carrier Squadron, then the 1st Carrier Division of the 3rd Fleet. Around 1944 (Showa 19), she underwent modifications extending her flight deck by 15 meters. Radar and rocket launchers were also installed at this time. In this configuration, she fought in the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
