This is the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's latest cigar-shaped submarine. It was completed in 1998 (Heisei 10). Eleven vessels of this class were completed by 2008. The hull sides feature a conformal array sonar, and numerous other cutting-edge technologies are incorporated.
