1/72 scale plastic model.
The Mitsubishi T-2 is the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's supersonic trainer aircraft.
The T-2's airframe overview: two-seat, twin-engine configuration. The engines are British Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Adour Mk801A with afterburners, delivering a maximum thrust of 3,310 kg.
The high-wing configuration features a clipped delta wing with a 9-degree dihedral angle to maximize flap area. Lateral control was changed from ailerons to spoilers. The air intake is a fixed ramp type with six auxiliary air intakes around its perimeter. It carries a fixed armament of an M61A-1 Vulcan cannon and is equipped with the domestically developed J/AWG-11 radar FCS developed by Mitsubishi Electric. However, these features are not present on the early-model T-2 used for basic fighter pilot training.
As described above, the T-2 trainer existed in two variants: the early and late models.
Students who completed the basic flight training course on the T-33A and earned their wing insignia proceed to the Basic Fighter Training Course at Matsushima Air Base.
Students learn the fundamentals of supersonic flight and piloting using the early model T-2.
In the subsequent combat pilot training course, students learned fighter aircraft operation, including firing exercises, using the T-2 late-model equipped with radar and a Vulcan cannon. Graduates of this course were assigned to various combat units.
The T-2s deployed at Matsushima Base in 1975 were used for student training for nearly 30 years before being retired from training flights in 2004, succeeded by the F-2B.
Late-model T-2s were used by the Flight Training Squadron (Aggressor) between 1981 and 1990.
