Product Introduction
The F-4EJ Kai is a fighter aircraft developed from the F-4EJ Phantom II for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
Adopted in 1968 as the successor to the F-86F, deployment of the F-4EJ began in fiscal year 1969. After over 20 years of service, research and development commenced in 1980 to extend the aircraft's service life and enhance its capabilities. As a result, the modification plan for the F-4EJ Kai was announced in February 1982. This modification primarily focused on enhancing combat capabilities and adopting the ASIP inspection method for airframe life extension. Regarding combat capability enhancement, the aircraft was first equipped with the AN/APG-66J fire control radar. This was a modified version of the Westinghouse AN/APG-66 used on the F-16, adapted for the F-4EJ. This radar was adopted as a response to lessons learned from the MiG-25's forced landing in Hakodate. It is a compact pulse Doppler radar well-suited for detecting aircraft flying low over the sea from above.
Concurrently, the onboard computer was upgraded from an analog to a digital system.
This enabled integration of the weapons systems, allowing operation of the domestically produced ASM-1 anti-ship missile. The navigation system was also upgraded from analog to digital. The digitization of the inertial navigation system significantly improved navigation accuracy and added a target marking function capable of marking up to three locations. Additionally, for self-defense, the radar warning receiver was upgraded to an enhanced model, displaying detailed data on the cockpit CRT screen.
Furthermore, to simplify pilot procedures, the HOTAS (Hands-On Throttle-And-Stick) concept has been adopted, allowing various operations while hands remain on the control stick and throttle lever.
Alongside these upgrades, a new Head-Up Display (HUD) projects processed data, enabling pilots to read information while maintaining forward visual focus.
The F-4EJ Kai adopted the ASIP (Aircraft Status Information Processing) system as a service life extension measure. This system manages the flight performance data of each individual aircraft via computer, enabling separate fatigue management for each airframe. This ASIP system allows for an extension of approximately 2,000 flight hours per aircraft. While primarily tasked with intercept combat, the F-4EJ Kai also exhibits significantly enhanced ground attack capabilities compared to the F-4EJ. Consequently, as the F-1 support fighter is scheduled for retirement, one squadron of F-4EJ Kai aircraft is slated to assume support combat duties. *This product is a plastic model kit requiring assembly and painting. *Additional items such as adhesives, tools, and paints are required for assembly and painting. ※“Plastic Model” is a registered trademark owned by the Japan Plastic Model Manufacturers Association.
