Product Introduction
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force is the world's third operator of the Eagle, following the United States Air Force and Israel. Having previously used the F-104J as its interceptor fighter, the JASDF investigated the F-X as a successor to the F-104J. After evaluating numerous candidates, the F-15 was selected on December 9, 1976 (Showa 51). The first aircraft arrived at Gifu Air Base on March 27, 1981 (Showa 56). The initial F-15Js introduced to the JASDF were fundamentally equivalent to the US Air Force's F-15C Block 26, with some modifications unique to the JASDF. The main modifications included the addition of the Self-Defense Forces' unique Automatic Warning Control System (Badge System) and the High-Speed Data Device (J/ASW-10 Data Link System) for receiving intercept control from E-2C early warning aircraft, along with changing the antenna at the tip of the vertical tail fin to a mass balance.
