Description
Pit Road - Skywave Series - I-13 & I-14 - Plastic Model - W230
Product Description
The I-13 (Type A Modified 2) was planned as the second ship of the quasi-sister class I-12 (Type A Modified 1), which featured simplified machinery compared to the I-9 (Type A) built as a flagship submarine capable of carrying a seaplane reconnaissance aircraft.
However, due to wartime material shortages reducing the planned number of I-400-class submarine aircraft carriers (Special Type), its design was significantly modified to carry two Seiran seaplanes as compensation. The bridge was shifted to the left to accommodate the enlarged hangar, and the ship was equipped with a catapult and large crane similar to the Sen-Tok-type. Modifications, including adding bulges to the hull to ensure stability despite the increased displacement, were also implemented. I-13 was commissioned in December 1944, and I-14 followed in March 1945.
The two submarines, I-13 and I-14, disassembled and transported the reconnaissance aircraft Saiun for transport to Truk Base. This was part of preparations for the attack on the American task force at Ulithi Atoll by the submarines I-400 and I-401, with the aim of conducting reconnaissance at that location.
While I-14 reached Truk safely, I-13 went missing. The attack on Ulithi never materialized, and the war ended.
