About the Tokaido Fifty-Three Stations
The Tokaido was one of the five major highways established during the Edo period by the Tokugawa shogunate to unify the nation. It connected Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto, spanning 492 km. Fifty-three post stations were set up along the route to relay travelers and goods.
Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints depicting scenes along this highway are famous and were often featured in waka poetry and haiku.
About the Niihama Checkpoint
The Niihama Checkpoint corresponds to present-day Niihama-cho, Kosai City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and was established by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1600.
As a major checkpoint on the Tōkaidō, it enforced strict security measures to protect the Edo shogunate.
Forced to relocate twice due to natural disasters, the existing buildings were reconstructed in 1858.
Though abolished in 1869, the site holds significant historical value as Japan's only surviving checkpoint building from that era. It is designated a “Special Historic Site” by the national government. About the Kit
